16 September 2022: Our 2022-2023 season starts today. This year all our talks and competitions will be held onlne using Zoom, at 8:00pm on alternate Fridays, with a few additional in-person practical and social meetings. Up-to-date details are shown on the programme page. Online visitors are very welcome, with the Zoom login details available using the Visitor buttons on the programme.
14 March 2022: We're pleased to announce that the postponed 3-way Match-a-DPI competition has been rescheduled to take place on 6 May. This has meant moving the all-important AGM to 27 May. The Annual Dinner originally planned for that date will take place a little later on a date to be finalised.
18 February 2022: COMPETITION CANCELLED or postponed. Sadly due to the travel disruption and safety issues caused by storm Eunice it has been necessary to cancel tonight’s 3-way Match-a-DPI competition. We hope to be able to arrange another date.
7 February 2022: While we continue to meet mainly online, our 3-way “match-a-DPI” competition against our friends from Hoddesdon and Ware on 18 February will be held in the hall. This is the modern follow-up to the traditional “match-a-slide” comp in which an image from one club must be matched in some dubious way by the others. The judge provides further entertainment. We had hoped to be back in the hall for Robert Snarey’s “Japan at Cherry Blossom Time” two weeks later but this meeting will now be online.
4 January 2022: In light of the increase in the number of Covid cases, and the unpleasantness of needing to wear masks at hall meetings, the committee has decided to suspend meeting in the hall and move online until further notice. The syllabus page here on the website will be kept updated.
10 August 2021: Our 2021-2022 season starts on 10 September, and the Syllabus is now online. This year, with an innovative hybrid programme, we will be meeting both in our hall and online, on alternate weeks. With half the meetings online we can welcome members and visitors from outside our local area, and we have introduced a formal Online Member category for those wishing to attend all the online meetings with the opportunity to enter our Digital Image competitions. More information HERE.
6 July 2021: SERVER MAINTENANCE: our site will be temporarily unavailable tonight from 23:00 to 02:00 due to essential maintenance in the data centre. Apologies to late night viewers for any inconvenience.
1 February 2021: VISITORS WELCOME! Now into the second half of the season we're pleased to have welcomed many visitors to our online meetings from nearby clubs and beyond. One good thing to have come from lockdown is a great collaboration between clubs in sharing meetings and speakers. Fewer opportunities for photography mean we have dropped some of our planned competitions and increased the number of lectures – to a total of 14 this season. To obtain the entry code for any meeting just click its VISITOR button on the Syllabus page; the code will be emailed to you. PDF posters promoting the talks are also available on the page.
12 October 2020: With the season under way and running smoothly on Zoom we'd like to reiterate that visitors are welcome to join us online. Our first lecture of the season is next Friday 16 October, when Keith Snell – based in Cumbria – will give a wide-ranging talk titled "My Restless Lens". To obtain the entry code for any meeting just click its VISITOR button on the Syllabus page; the code will be emailed to you.
22 August 2020: The 2020-2021 Syllabus is now live. The season starts online on Friday 18 September. Visitors are welcome to our online meetings and joining information for each meeting is shown on the Syllabus. If you wish to become a member of the Club please contact the Secretary.
18 August 2020: Our 2020-21 season will start as planned on 18 September, and will begin online. The programme will be published very soon – rather later than normal as the Committee works hard to fine-tune the meetings to suit the online environment, based on our experience with last year's extended season.
6 July 2020: Looking ahead to our 2020-21 season it is still unclear whether we will be allowed to meet at our normal venue, but the season is due to start on Friday 18 September, hopefully with a real meeting but if necessary with a virtual one. The 2019-20 season was extended by some seven weeks, and although one talk was postponed to next year we hosted five additional talks online. One benefit has been the wider than normal range of speakers available: one was based in Ireland, another in France. And we welcomed virtual visitors from across the UK, as well as one from South Africa. All of our competitions were judged.
13 June 2020: EXTENDED AGAIN! There will be a Special General Meeting on 19 June, details of which have been emailed to members. On Tuesday 23 June we will challenge our friends at Bishop's Stortford and Ware clubs. 26 June will be an online talk by Dublin-based photographer Paul Stanley. And on 10 July Ron Tear will judge our Inter-Club Competition v Southgate, postponed from May. More details in the Syllabus.
21 May 2020: SEASON EXTENDED. Although we have been forced to cancel meetings due to Covid-19 – including the all-important Annual Dinner – we continue to offer online events at our normal meeting time on Friday evenings, and have now extended our season into June. Tom Peck returns on 22 May to judge the postponed final print competition as digital images. 29 May is a quiz evening. And on 5 June professional photographer Julian Elliott will present “Mongolia: From Steppe to Eagle Hunters”. More details in the Syllabus.

22 April 2020: ONLINE MEETINGS: Following a successful and enjoyable online talk by club member Alison Jenkins on 17 April we have arranged three more talks using the Zoom app for members and visitors:

  • 24 April: “The Great Whites of Seal Island” by Bob Johnson
  • 1 May: “Hoddesdon Then and Now” by Phil Janes
  • 15 May: “What is a Portrait?” with Dr Tom Peck

Zoom login details will be emailed to members. Visitors wishing to join please CONTACT us for details.

2 April 2020: CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: The Committee held its planned committee meeting last night using video app Zoom. The three competitions affected by the Covid-19 situation will now all be judged remotely as PDI comps:

  • PDI comp 20 March: entries already in
  • Print comp 3 April: members asked to send entries as digital images
  • Set Subject comp 17 April: digital entries only, up to 4 per member

The AGM is postponed until early next season.

17 March 2020: CORONAVIRUS: Following the latest government advice we have decided reluctantly to cancel our meetings for the rest of this season, in common with other clubs. More information will be posted here in due course.
10 February 2020: PROGRAMME CHANGE. The 2020 early May bank holiday has moved from Monday 4 May to Friday 8 May to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. The Government announced this change after we had gone to press with our 2019-2020 Syllabus. The 2-way PDI battle aganst Southgate club will now take place on 15 May instead of 8 May as originally planned.
29 September 2019: In response to Apple adding Dark Mode to the iPhone with iOS 13 we have introduced our own dark mode to our website, which follows the setting on the phone when the screen width is less than 480px. It should also respnd to the dark mode of Android phones though we have not yet been able to confirm this. Any feedback would be appreciated!
31 August 2019: Our Members' Galleries were not part of the big website redesign earlier in the year, but have now been updated to the new structure and should perform well on mobile devices, as well as on computer screens. We look forward to adding more galleries soon from some of our newer members.
19 July 2019: Our new website is now live! This has been a major rewrite – from the ground up – to create a responsive design that ought to display well on all devices from smartphones to desktop screens. It should be fully compliant with the latest web standards. Please report any technical issues.
26 June 2019: The 2019-2020 Syllabus is now live. The season starts on Friday 13 September. (In the event the cancelled meeting from 2 March 2018 couldn't take place, but is booked again for 24 Apri 2020. Fingers crossed!)
12 July 2018: The 2018-2019 Syllabus is now live on the website. The season starts on Friday 14 September. And we're pleased to confirm that last season's cancelled 2 March talk will now take place on 5 April 2019.
1 March 2018: The meeting planned for tomorrow 2 March has been cancelled due to the bad weather (the "Beast from the East"). We hope to rearrange the talk on another date in the near future.
13 October 2017: On Sunday 15 October the website will be unavailable at some time between 21:00 and 23:00, due to essential system maintenance. Afterwards members may need to log in again to the Members' Area. Apologies for any inconvenience.
